Carbondale Arts presents The Beauty of Beasts, a solo exhibition by scratchboard artist Megan George at the Carbondale Arts Gallery, on display October 2 - 29, 2026. The opening reception will take place on First Friday, October 2, from 5-7pm at The Launchpad, with an artist talk at 5:30pm.

Animals have always been a huge part of scratchboard artist, Megan George’s life. From her upbringing on a dairy farm to her career as a vet tech, animals have taught Megan the essence of what it means to be on this earth. Her work conveys the emotions and lessons that animals can teach us, in all their life stages.
This body of work represents my relationship to the animal world throughout my life. From my time as an Equine Veterinary Technician to finding skeletons on my hiking trips, I hope to portray the essence of animals in their many forms. - Megan George

At first glance, the work of Megan George seems as if it may be a photograph. But upon closer inspection, the tiny marks made by an X-acto knife open to layers upon layers of complexity and depth. Megan’s pieces are extremely intricate and sophisticated, giving the pieces another level of wonder. She carefully calculates each layer that contributes ultimately to the form and texture that is seen from afar. Megan achieves this complexity with scratchboard; a medium common in primary schools but infrequently found in the fine art realm.
Megan grew up on a dairy farm in western New York. She was instructed under the tutelage of a local artist, Mary Wertz. Megan went to college for Veterinary Technology; a career in which has lent countless sources for reference for her work. She currently resides in Silt, Colorado with her cat, Violet.
Megan has received People’s Choice Award in both the 2023 and 2026 Valley Visual Show in Carbondale CO, and the People’s Choice Award for 2023 and 2024 at the Redstone Art Festival.
