"Intimate. Immensity." by Laura Dortmans

“Intimate bodies, rest.” by Laura Dortmans (stoneware, slip, glaze, epoxy, sand, steel stand)

I work with gestural movements that translate a moment of intimate touch and give form to the immensity of internal geography; desire, tender love, sensual connection, preserved in space and time.

Carbondale Arts presents “Intimate. Immensity” a solo exhibition by Laura Dortmans at the Carbondale Arts Gallery, on display October 3 - 30, 2025. The opening reception will take place First Friday, October 3, from 5-7pm at The Launchpad, with an artist talk at 5:30pm.

Note that there are 2 other exhibitions that will run concurrently (October 3 - 30) in the gallery space:
”Fluid Landscapes” by Michael Kinsley and “Recording Time (with Scraps and Words)” by Courtney Kenny

Laura Dortmans’ ceramic sculptures perform as a surrogate for the physicality of her body – not as direct representation, rather as a response to bodily sensations. The solidification of gestural movement translates a moment of intimate touch and gives form to the immensity of internal geography; desire, tender love, sensual connection, preserved in space and time.

Sisters, Oregon

Laura Dortmans is a ceramic artist originally from the south-eastern coast of Australia, now based in Sisters, Oregon. She completed her MFA in Ceramics at SUNY New Paltz in 2024.

Laura’s studio research explores materiality and body. Working with experimental processes, her ceramic sculptures perform as a surrogate for her own physicality and the sensations of the body, seeking a material language that conveys movement, visual tension and spaciousness.

Laura was a 2024 Aspen Art Museum Fellow and the recipient of the 2023 Emerging Artist Award from the Australian Consulate-General in New York.
