Nested in Carbondale with Nido
Carbondale has a lot of plans in the works for new businesses, park and pool updates, it’s all very exciting! We were pleased to touch base with owner of Nido, Robyn Liotta, on finding her place in Carbondale’s retail community, with a new location at 259 Main Street.
Can you share the vision of Nido, perhaps some inspiration for the items you carry? Is there a fun story behind the store name?
“Creating a local, community-focused business has been a dream of mine for years. From our front door I can see the building that formerly housed Miser’s Mercantile, a welcoming community hub on a Saturday mornings. That welcoming feeling is what we strive to spread in our business. We love talking to and engaging with our customers, truly. Some are friends from years ago and others just moved here and are interested in the lowdown on local things. Nido is a safe landing pad for people to gather, chat and share information.
In addition to wanting to be a community hub, we wanted to fill a niche that we believed was in need of more attention in town, namely menswear and swimwear for women and men. This matters to us because we are not stepping on an existing business's toes, but rather adding options for customers while being on fantastic terms with all other current retailers. The final slice of our inspiration pie is our commitment to community and planet in carrying brands and goods that have a defined level of sustainability built into their production practices.
The name Nido, “nest” in Spanish, is an irresistible name for someone named after a bird, as well as a nod to my husband and business partner Tito’s, Central American heritage.”
Congratulations on the new Main Street location! How do you envision contributing to Carbondale's evolving character and retail landscape?
“We are thrilled to be included in the vibrant and robust, dynamic energy of Main Street. Words simply cannot describe how fortunate we feel being temporary caretakers of 259 Main Street. Nido also has the good fortune of having a strong bond and reliance on our team members. In addition, we offer space for pop-ups and local artisans to display their work.
The Carbondale business community is a wonderful, supportive group of people– we lift each other up. I have pieces from every store in town and have enjoyed my shopping experience at each store. This is the benefit of each business finding their own niche offering.”
How do you plan to engage with the Carbondale community, especially local artists and makers?
We engage with our community in a number of ways every day- we are open seven days per week. We have conversations with every person who enters the door. We have had experiences where individuals tell us things such as “you made my father so happy with your kindness and assistance,” and have often heard “there are really good vibes in here.” We take comments like that seriously and are touched by them.
We carry a number of goods made by local artisans, such as candles, coffee, charcuterie boards, jewelry, youth-made and designed T-shirts and more.
Outside of the items we carry, we support causes and organizations that align with our brand value. Nido has and will continue to donate to the POW Foundation, 5Point Film Festival, Aspen Valley Land Trust, the Carbondale Family Block Party Auction, C.A.R.E and the Surfrider Foundation.
Are there any events coming up you're excited about? What should your clientele keep their eyes out for?
We are always excited for every First Friday. We look forward to hosting local pop-up parties for local artisans. We are particularly excited about the temporary return of our 1962 Airstream trailer for our annual anniversary celebration in August.
Where can folks stay up to date with Nido's offerings?
