"Structures Inachevées" by Ludivine Gérard

“Construction autour d’une silhouette - Model 2” (detail)
40”x60” (Acrylic, 2025)

My work unfolds within a space of constant transformation. Painting, for me, is not a fixed image but a living structure — one that remains open, permeable, and responsive to time, memory, and perception.

Structures Inachevées brings together the evolving threads of artist Ludivine’s work from the emotional layering of her series Recadrage to the fragmented presence of the human form in Silhouette. Each piece remains open, unfinished, inviting the viewer to complete the story or let it remain in motion. Across all series, the artist explores the tension between structure and absence, balance and disruption, visibility and silence.

Memory plays a central role in this process. It does not operate as narration, but as sensation: altered, partial, unstable. Certain details sharpen, while others dissolve. This selective emphasis creates areas of ambiguity, allowing the work to resist a single reading and remain open to interpretation.

The spectator occupies a crucial place in this process. A work is never completed by the artist alone; it is temporarily resolved through viewing. Light changes, distance changes, emotions change — and the painting changes with them. It is finished only for an instant, only through perception.

Ludivine Gérard, Fruita, Colorado

My artistic journey began at a very young age and developed through multidisciplinary training in photography, drawing, printmaking, graphic design, and painting. This cross-disciplinary foundation has shaped a practice rooted in experimentation, structure, and visual rhythm.

I graduated in painting from the École supérieure des Arts de l’Image Le 75 in Brussels, followed by a degree in graphic design from the École supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc Liège. My formation was further enriched through advanced workshops in painting with Boris Semenoff and Pierre Debatty, and in printmaking through linocut at Éric Muller’s studio.

These formative experiences — spanning painting, graphic design, and printmaking — have been pivotal in shaping my visual language, particularly my approach to layering, framing, and the tension between control and spontaneity.
