Carbondale Arts presented “Stone Souls”, a two person exhibition by Alice Bedard-Voorhees and Greg Watts at the Carbondale Arts R2 Gallery. “Stone Souls” was on exhibition from April 2 - 29, 2021.

The term “multinaturalism” acknowledges the relationships of human beings with other forms in our world and how these beings “reveal themselves to humans” (Hallowel and Vivieros de Castro). Some of the first peoples talked about stones as guides or messengers. We also know that the physical traits of stones tell us much about the geological history. The words of shamans, poets, anthropologists, and archeologists add to our history of stones as messengers of a deeper relationship with the earth and in this instance our western land forms.

The works of photographer Greg Watts and mixed-media and print artist Alice Bedard-Voorhees expressed the importance of their relationships with stones and the spiritual and aesthetic relationships they inspire. Watts’ work captured stone and time, and the presence of other humans drawn to the same places that speak to their relationship to the same places hundreds of years prior. Bedard-Voorhees explores stones as relatives or extended family.

This exhibition opened the same dates (April 2 - 29, 2021) as “Contemporary Fiber Art: Crossing Thresholds”, a group show curated by Jill Scher. Both of these exhibitions were generously sponsored by Kat and Pete Rich who are super awesome supporters of the arts and are constantly inspired by the power of creativity here in our community.

Greg Watts, photography, Carbondale, CO

Greg Watts moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1997. Greg Watts studied architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) from 1979 - 1985. The curriculum at SCI-ARC encouraged the use of photography as both a communicative and artistic way of representing a concept or idea. His own photography expresses thoughts or feelings in a visual way, connecting with our physical world, be it a building or rock. His showings include a solo show at the Launchpad in 2017, Bonfire Coffee, Red Brick, Aspen Chapel, Art of State in Arvada, CO, and The Capitol Group Show of Creative Districts in Denver. His work can be viewed at https://www.instagram.com/gregwattsphotography/
