Carbondale Arts presents “Art For Change” with an opening reception on First Friday, May 4, from 6p.m. to 8p.m. at the R2 Gallery located in The Launchpad at 76 S. 4th Street in Carbondale. This group exhibit is composed of five artists: Jill Scher (curator), Wewer Keohane, Shannon Muse, Jill Sabella, and Jan Schubert. These artists work in a variety of media that include fiber, mixed media, glass, paper, wax, and painting.
Each artist has been invited to use their art to respond to a perceived needed change, whether that change be social, political, cultural or spiritual. Artists have been encouraged to find inspirational quotations as a starting point to create their work, some of which address environmental protection issues. “In the Balance”, a fiber creation by Jill Scher, was inspired by John F. Kennedy’s 1963 address before the Irish Parliament in Dublin: “The supreme reality of our time is…our common vulnerability on this planet”. From Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi to Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, these five artists have found wide-ranging inspirations for their artworks, all of which are varied in size, materials, and structure. Come be inspired and surprised!
“Art For Change” opens the same evening as “Narrative Threads”, which features a selection of contemporary artists’ books by artists from throughout the United States. “Narrative Threads” is curated by Alicia Bailey, curator/gallerist of Denver-based Abecedarian Artists’ Books.
