Carbondale Arts presented “1 = 1 = 3”, with an opening reception to the public at the R2 Gallery in The Launchpad in Carbondale on Friday, Jul. 6 from 6 to 8p.m. “1 + 1 = 3” was a collaborative exhibition featuring new works by ceramic artist Doug Casebeer and mixed media artist Betsy Chaffin, both local to the Roaring Fork Valley.
The exhibition focused on one central question: how does the work of one artist affect another?
Doug and Betsy collaborated to produce a series of ceramic sculptures that will have the creative energy of each artists involved. As a potter, Doug engaged in translating Betsy’s two-dimensional drawings into sculptural forms. Betsy adapted her painting to Doug’s three-dimensional ceramic forms. The work represented an area of new exploration for both the potter and the painter as they work out of their normal artistic medium.
The two artists also exhibited examples of their current work, and it was interesting to see what sort of influence each had on the other in their collaboration.
A preview for Carbondale Arts members and gallery patrons took place before the opening reception on Friday, Jul. 6, at 5:30 p.m. with a talk with both artists and an opportunity to see the exhibition before it opens at 6p.m.
