2011 Mountain Fair Contests
Singer/Songwriter Contest
The 2nd Annual Mountain Fair Singer/Songwriter Competition is calling all emerging Singer/Songwriters to come show your songs! Youth and Adult Competition winners will win a guitar from Two Old Hippies and ½ day recording session with Guy Wells. Runners up will also has a guitar prize from Glenwood Music and Roaring Fork Music. The adult competition first round open call will be held on July 26th at Steve’s Guitars 6:30pm. The youth competition first round open call will be held on July 25th at Steve’s Guitars 6:30pm.
Competition is meant for emerging and independent singer songwriters. Contestants may not be signed to a major label. Competition is a solo contest/ contestant may not use back up musicians. No song repetition in the preliminary and final rounds. Song must be 5 min or less. Finalist chosen from preliminary round will compete in the finals at the 40th Annual Mountain Fair. Contestants will be judged on the following: Material Selection, Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance, Stage Presence. Competition is meant for emerging and independent singer songwriters. Mountain Fair Competitions
MT. SOPRIS RUNOFF & PRINCE CREEK 4-MILE – This year, the 33rd annual foot race from Basalt to the Mountain Fair is 3 miles shorter. The 14-mile race starts at the Emma Schoolhouse at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning and finishes in the open space in Sopris Park. Also new this year is the addition of a 4-mile race that starts at the top of Prince Creek Rd. and finishes in the Open Space at Sopris Park. Come on out and welcome the runners home! A shuttle will take runners from Sopris Park to the top of Prince Creek at 7:15 a.m. for the 4-mile race, and a shuttle will also be available after the 14-mile race to return runners to their vehicles in Basalt. Independence Run and Hike is sponsoring both races.
FLY CASTING COMPETITION – Run by the infamous fisherman, Gill Finn, one of the legends of fly-fishing in the Roaring Fork Valley, the competition takes place Saturday, 10 a.m., at the Open Space area of the Park. Prizes donated by Alpine Angling. Registration till 9:45 a.m. at the Info Booth.
PIE & CAKE BAKING – The Pie Judging takes place on Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. and Cake is on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in the Judging Canopy near the Info Booth. Categories include: Fruit, Cream and Exotic for pies; Cake, Torte and Vegan for cakes.
HORSESHOE TOURNAMENTS – Singles and Doubles – The Singles Tourney takes place at high noon on Saturday. The Doubles Tourney is on Sunday, also at high noon. Both events take place at Glassier Park, two blocks south of Sopris Park on Weant Blvd. Register at the Info Booth beginning Friday.
LIMBO CONTEST – Get down with Dr. Limbo at 1:45 p.m. Saturday in the Open Space area. A Kids Limbo Contest will be held at the Oasis at noon. Prizes are donated by Alpine Angling and Dr. Limbo.
THE WOOD SPLITTING CHAMPIONSHIP – Not to be missed! The Women’s Competition takes place on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. The Men’s is held Sunday at 4 p.m. Both are in the Open Space. Registration begins Friday. All entrants must wear safety shoes. Steel-toed protectors are available at the competition. Winners receive a new wood splitting maul.
THE PORCUPINE LOOP BIKE RACE - In its eighth year, this race is a casual, fun race. Aloha Mountain Cyclery and The Stompaz Bike Collective have added even more fun by requiring costumes and creating obstacles. Racers meet in Sopris Park at 8:00 a.m on Sunday, behind the stage. The race begins at the driveway of Joyce and Dick Hunter on Dinkle Lake Road, on the Porcupine Loop Trail and ends in Sopris Park.
Winners from finished competitions will be honored on stage at 2:00 p.m. Sunday by Garfield County Fair Royalty
