Carbondale Middle School Presents Super Villain Comics. Super Villain Comics reunites the Justice League to search for Captain America who has gone missing. Fighting a new group of Super Villains, who cause massive oil spills, exploit foreign labor, cause our financial system to collapse and try to purchase our politicians – our somewhat flawed Superheroes try to sort the good guys from the bad. In our confusing modern world, it is often hard to tell which is which.

Car chases, special effects, live punk music, social commentary and plenty of song, dance, and combat mix together to create an experience unlike any school play you have ever seen. Carbondale Middle School, Friday and Saturday May 18 and 19, at 7PM. Adults $10, Kids $6. Tickets available at CCAH. Don’t miss this one of a kind multimedia experience!

This year, the CCAH is pleased to present the work of 15 young artists, ages 8 through 19, who have been using their digital cameras for the past 3 months to capture their own rendering of this year’s project title, the Good, the Bad and the Beautiful.

The TCE project, conceived and executed by George Stranahan of the Flying Dog Studio, Sheri Gaynor of the Creative Spark Studio, Sue Drinker of Drinker Durrance Graphics and Karen Lanier, continues to strive toward giving young artists the opportunity, the equipment and the software to explore and develop skills photographically, technically and aesthetically. The 2012 Child’s Eye curriculum was developed around the proposition; we live in our various worlds… of community, of friends, of family and of self. Each of those circles are a dynamic interweaving of good, bad and beautiful things, people and places. Without judgment, but with creativity and honesty, share the experience of those dynamics of every day life.

Please join the TCE team and CCAH on Saturday, May 19, in concert with the Roaring Fork Studio Tour, in the R2 Gallery, Third Street Center (520 South Third Street, Carbondale) to enjoy this wonderfully fresh look from The Child’s Eye. The Gallery will be open from 10:00 am until our grand artists’ opening that evening from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

Summer Music In Carbondale

CCAH and the Town of Carbondale are proud to announce the Summer Of Music lineup. Shows start at 6 pm with local music. All events take place in Sopris Park.

July 1st Chuck Prophet
Chuck Prophet shapes his restless career with inimitable subtle flair: a vivid parade of razor-edged one-liners camouflaged in a slackjawed drawl, songs about heartbreak and everyman heroism, drenched in twisted lines of rude Telecaster. Legendary producer and musician Jim Dickinson (The Rolling Stones, The Replacements, Big Star, Bob Dylan) was once asked how this kid could pull off the stuff he did. Dickinson simply replied, “What do you expect from somebody who got his cherry popped at the funny farm when he was fourteen?” Chuck will be here with a great band backing him up and lots of insight -http://www.chuckprophet.com.

July 8th – Haunted Windchimes
The Haunted Windchimes sound draws from traditional folk and American roots music. Grounded in honeyed harmonies and spirited pickin’, it lies in a nowhere land between distinct styles: It’s not quite
bluegrass or blues or country. Still, there are elements of all those in songs. However, it’s the vocal harmonies that really set them apart. The sound is often moody and melancholy, but it is always deeply affecting. The Haunted Windchimes are a band on their way up so we are really excited to welcome them to Carbondale! www.hauntedwindchimes.com.

July 15th – Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys
Since forming in 1988, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys have emerged as one of the world’s most respected practitioners of American roots music, western swing, rockabilly, and traditional country—playing it like they invented it. “I think of us as just a rock and roll band, a rock and roll band that’s letting the roots show,” says bandleader Big Sandy. Whether they’re playing the Grand Ole Opry, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, or simply climbing out of a bus after rolling into your town, these guys are bringing us some great old-time rock and roll. Big Sandy does many tunes in Spanish as well. http://www.bigsandy.net

July 22nd – Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds
Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds is a nine-piece powerhouse that puts a modern spin on classic soul. The band is led by Arleigh Kincheloe (Sister Sparrow), whose astoundingly powerful voice and sly demeanor make for a spellbinding presence onstage. She is backed by the mighty force of The Dirty Birds, a flock of eight men who masterfully lay down thundering grooves and soaring melodies. While each of the Birds are capable of lighting up the stage with jaw-dropping displays of musicianship, it’s clear they’re focused on delivering the band’s infectious music as a single entity. Simply put, the band’s live show is explosive. Sister Sparrow is playing big festivals like Bonaroo, Telluride Jazz Festival and New belgium’s Tour De Fat. http://www.sistersparrow.com.

The Carbondale Mountain Fair promises to be another good one.

Friday – July 27th,
Spore Favore followed by Grant Farm, a refreshing harvest of a band from the fertile Front Range of Colorado. This much-anticipated four-piece represents the fruition of the efforts of National Flatpicking Champion Tyler Grant, one of the hottest and best-known guitar players on the scene today. Tyler was a member of The Drew Emmitt Band and The Emmitt-Nershi Band from 2005 until 2010 when he went on his own to pursue his calling as a bandleader. In Grant Farm he is partnered with dynamic drummer Chris Misner, also of the Drew Emmitt Band and Bill Nershi’s Blue Planet. The quartet is completed by funky phenom Adrian “Ace” Engfer on bass and the prodigious Sean Foley on keyboards. Grant Farm twangs and ticks and takes electric/acoustic bluegrass/country to a whole new level. www.tylergrant.com.

Saturday
Mountain Fair Saturday brings a lovely array of music including the dulcet, intoxicating Brazilian music of Norteysur and the big sound of the valley’s own Sector 7G. Diego’s Umbrella from San Francisco will turn the late afternoon into a throng of whirling dervishes. Diego’s Umbrella are San Francisco’s Ambassadors of Gypsy Rock. Internationally known and revered, their lively stage show, great songs, antics and humor have garnered them a cult following around the world. With a mix of Eastern European tradition, pop sensibility and punk rock energy, they have had crowds going wild for years. “Where Gogol Bordello meets Muse. These underground heroes will soon be international superstars.” (ap press) www.diegosumbrella.com. The Congress finishes off Saturday night with a blast of rock and roll happiness. These guys are a musical machine that harkens back to the raw energy early days of the Black Crowes and Little Feat. In one year they have played Wakarusa, High Sierra and JazzAspen/Snowmass to name a few. Get ready to dance! www.thecongressmusic.com

Sunday

Sunday starts with the Starlettes Gospel of Love. Soul dripped harmonies and sequins will get us movin. The great female energy continues with The Refugees, Cindy Bullens, Deborah Holland, and Wendy Waldman came together in 2007, and since that time have been wowing audiences and radio DJs alike with their soaring harmonies, indelible musicianship, and unforgettably humorous stage presence. Each of The Refugees has logged more than three decades in the industry, with nineteen solo albums and multiple Grammy Award nominations to their credit, featuring musical styles that blend country, rock, folk, and Americana. To describe them as eclectic would be an understatement. These three women have utilized their intense drive and relentless passions to create an entirely new sound visit them at www.therefugeesmusic.com. Following the Refugee’s, the worldly rhythms of MARKUS JAMES and The WASSONRA. This ensemble is Mississippi meets Africa and is sure to take us on a journey. In an age of endless crossover between most conceivable forms of music, it’s but small surprise that a Caucasian man from Virginia is making blues with West African witch doctors. Check these guys out! www.firenzerecords.com. The festival finishes with The Infamous Stringdusters. The Dusters are as hot as it gets these days and Carbondale is one of their favorite places to play! The Infamous Stringdusters are at the forefront of a new movement in bluegrass music. Their unmatched virtuosity has enabled them to take acoustic music to a completely new level. They wield an expansive repertoire touching on masters from Jimmy Martin to John Hartford, but their strength lies in their original compositions. Dedication to arrangements sets them apart and extended improvisation makes every performance completely unique. The live Stringdusters experience is anti-formulaic, groove friendly, and mind‐expanding ‐ not your granddaddy’s bluegrass. Unless your granddaddy was Jerry Garcia. www.thestringdusters.com.
