DIA DE LOS MUERTOS GALLERY SHOW

Posted by holly on September 8, 2010  |   No Comments »

CCAH and its Council Gallery are pleased to announce the upcoming First Friday opening reception for Dia De Los Muertos. The reception will be held at the CCAH Center for the Arts at the Third Street Center on First Friday, November 5 from 6-8 p.m.

The exhibit will showcase the works of artists and local schools.  The work will represent each artists’ renditions of altar art to honor the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead.

Dia de los Muertos is a three-day Mexican festival in which families pay their respects to loved ones who have died. This ancient tradition, dating back to Aztec and Meso-American cultures over 3,000 years ago, reflects the traditional beliefs of a life/death/rebirth continuum, and reveres death as a beginning to a new life. It is believed that spirits of decreased loved ones return during this festival, and the tradition chants, “Don’t take anything lying down – not even death.”

The exhibit will stay up the entire month of November.

Susan Obermeyer Strauss

OCTOBER 23 and 24th, 10:00 to 3:00

Tuition: $85 for members, $110 for non members.

The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos, is a Mexican Holiday when families pray for, remember and celebrate friends and family members who have died. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars and shrines honoring the deceased. Although the day is serious, it is also a lively celebration.

For many years CCAH has held an annual Day of the Dead altar show including traditional and not-so- traditional altars and shrines. There are many of us who have always wanted to make an altar and didn’t know where to start. This year, we are offering a workshop with well-known artist, Susan Obermeyer-Strauss, to help get the creative juices flowing. Susan will be assisted by Diana Alcantara, an ELL teacher at Carbondale Middle School.

In the workshop, students will gain a brief historical understanding of Shrines and Altars and then begin to create their own. Students will use a range of techniques from plaster transfers, assemblage, collage, montage and simple construction. Some supplies will be provided by CCAH and some you will need to bring to class. A supply list will be furnished you at registration.

To register or for more information, please call 963-1680 or e-mail ccah@sopris.net.
